Once there was a boy who had a very bad temper. His father handed him over a bag of nails and said every time the boy lost his temper, he had to hammer a nail into the fence.
On the first day, the boy hammered 21 nails into that fence. The boy began to control his temper gradually over the next few weeks, and the number of nails he was hammering into the fence slowly decreased. He found that it was easier to control his temper than to hammer the nails into the fence.
Finally, a day came when the boy did not lose his temper at all. He told his father about the same and the father asked the boy to pull out a nail every day he kept his temper under control. Days passed and the boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were pulled out. The father took his son, led him to the fence, and said, “You have done well my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the previous one. When you say things in anger, they leave scars like these holes. You can put a knife into a man and draw it out. It would not matter how many times you say sorry, the wound is still there.”
Let’s control our anger and let’s not say things to people in the heat of the moment that we may later regret. There are some things in life that cannot be taken back.
